MUBI's take

One of the first women ever to make a film, Alice Guy-Blaché counted among the directorial trio who collaborated on this short: a loose adaptation of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Ripe for queer readings, Algie, the Miner is one of cinema’s earliest deconstructions of straight masculinity.
