On a foggy morning, a family wakes up to the news of the demolition of a house on the outskirts of their village. Father, a silent sympathiser, joins the community in demand for justice. The same day, his son Melu, a rickshaw puller in the city, is participating in a strike by his union.
Based on the eponymous novel by Gurdial Singh, this debut feature is a chronicle of the oppression experienced by the Dalits (lower caste) in rural Punjab. With its dark tones, silence, and meditative score, this film becomes a powerful reflection on the resilience and plight of the marginalised.
