Rome, 1976. A naïve British sound engineer named Gilderoy arrives to work on the post-synchronized soundtrack of an Italian horror film. As the line between film and reality blurs, he has to confront his own demons to stay afloat in an environment ruled by exploitation—both on and off-screen.
British director Peter Strickland has always been fascinated with the cinematic possibilities of sound, and would literalise said obsession with this nightmarish homage to 1970s giallo. Starring Toby Jones as a shy sound engineer, Berberian Sound Studio is a stunningly original, modern cult classic.
