In 2014 Toumani received a surprising call in Brazil. As his grandfather felt death approaching, he summoned everyone to keep up the tradition of passing the nation’s secrets onto the next generation. Along with many other Malians living abroad, Toumani returned to his native land to hear his words.
Known as the masters of words, the Djeli have guarded Malian history for generations. Through storytelling, myths, and music, Between Us, A Secret captures the community’s rites of passage. Rich in knowledge and metaphor, this poetic tale about culture and kinship shows the vital power of words.
