Synopsis

In a small rural community in the American West during the late 19th century, mute midwife Liz lives contentedly with her young daughter, stepson and husband. But her peaceful life ends when she goes to church with her family and discovers that the new preacher is a man connected to her past life.

MUBI's take

A neowestern by way of Lars von Trier, Martin Koolhoven’s bloody morality play complicates romanticized myths of the frontier with a visceral dose of horror. Linking religious hypocrisy to gender violence, Brimstone surprises with its casting of Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning as predator and prey.
