A female director’s latest project is to capture her sister’s marital difficulties on film in hopes of shedding light on the travails of modern romance. The film aspires to view the problems from a contemporary female perspective, but the story’s end belies its basis in traditional Mexican morality.
Just like cilantro and parsley, this lively romantic comedy brings pungent aromatic depth to its bed-hopping survey of marital crises in mid-’90s Mexico. Although blighted by distribution issues, it makes a riotous addition to the annals of New Mexican Cinema and won nine Mexican Academy Awards.
