Aspiring cartoonist Robert believes to be an artist is to suffer. So, he rejects his suburban life and drops out of school to work at a comic store and a public defender’s office. There he meets and becomes besotted by former low-level comic artist Wallace, leading him down a path of misadventures.
A wannabe cartoonist chooses chaos over comfort in this deliciously dark debut feature from writer-director Owen Kline. Produced by the Safdie brothers, and with a grungy aesthetic indebted to the comic-book creations of Robert Crumb, Funny Pages is a brutally funny tale of coming-of-age turmoil.
