Synopsis

Paris, 1938. Renée and Pierre, a young couple, book a night at the Hôtel du Nord. They are set on dying together, but after shooting Renée, Pierre lacks courage and runs away. Her life then becomes entwined with life at the hotel and, oddly, with another colorful couple—a young woman and her pimp…

MUBI's take

Famed for its production design courtesy of the extraordinary Alexandre Trauner, this atmospheric proto-noir from Marcel Carné finds romance and violence on the banks of the Paris canals. With its iconic cast of French stars, Hôtel du Nord is a classic of poetic realism from a master of the form.
