Synopsis

1939. Spanish republicans are fleeing Franco’s dictatorship to France. The French government has built concentration camps, limiting the refugees’ access to water and food. Here two men will become friends. One is a guard, the other is Josep Bartolí, an illustrator who fights against the regime.

MUBI's take

Josep is an insightful portrayal of Catalan artist Josep Bartolí, focusing on his escape from Franco’s regime. Directed by award-winning cartoonist Aurel, whose minimalist and evocative animation matches Bartolí’s own style, this is a stunning and poetic meditation on resistance, memory, and art.
