Synopsis

In the French harbor city of Le Havre, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa into the path of Marcel Marx, a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoe-shiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation.

MUBI's take

There’s a touch of Jacques Tati to this portrait of the titular port town, in which Aki Kaurismäki returns to France for a sunny and socially minded utopian parable. Drawing together an unlikely duo—a shoe shiner and a newly-arrived illegal immigrant—Le Havre is a warmly generous human comedy.
