Synopsis

A searing song cycle about two lovers going to pieces in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, Lou Reed’s Berlin was greeted by a chorus of rebuke upon its release in 1973. In, 2006, Reed played the album live for the first time, taking a five-night stand at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York.

MUBI's take

Lou Reed refused to perform his misanthropic masterwork for 33 years. Berlin, a cinematic album of doomed love, had been a critical failure, and was simply too painful to bear. Julian Schnabel captures its triumphant return to the stage in this prismatic concert film of pure rock ‘n’ roll swagger.
