An old man goes about his daily rituals on what might be his last day on Earth. As he wanders through the streets, bars, porn cinemas, and taco-joints of a Mexico City that is at once familiar and foreign, the pensioner has a series of encounters with locals—some bizarre and some commonplace.
With a patient, 9-minute opening shot Malaventura starts as it means to continue: this slice-of-life, minimalist drama situates its protagonist in their everyday urban environment and asks us not to look away. An excellent debut from Michel Lipkes, an impressively sobering, existential experience.
