Ayiva leaves his home in Burkina Faso to provide for his family. He takes advantage of his position in an illegal smuggling operation to journey to Italy with his friend Abas. They adapt to their new life there, but when tensions with the local community rise, things become increasingly dangerous.
The first of a Calabria-set triptych, Jonas Carpignano’s stunning debut retells the real-life experiences of protagonist Koudos Seihon through a blend of documentary and drama. An empathetic depiction of the European migrant crisis that lays bare the indignities faced by African workers in Italy.
