Shinnosuke is introduced to Shizu as a prospective marriage partner, but he falls in love with her widowed sister Oyu. Convention forbids Oyu to marry because she has to raise her son. Oyu convinces Shinnosuke and Shizu to marry so that she can remain close to Shinnosuke.
Based on a text by 20th century writer Jun’ichirō Tanizaki, Miss Oyu is an elegant, gorgeously shot melodrama from Japanese master Kenji Mizoguchi. Featuring a lasting performance from Mizoguchi’s muse Tanaka Kinuyo, the film fondly experiments with the rules of the love triangle.
