Synopsis

19th century Paris. Despondent artist Toulouse-Lautrec, frustrated by his disability, seeks solace in the drink, dance, and distractions at the infamous Moulin Rouge nightclub. An encounter with a girl in desperate need of help brings hope to his lonely life, but romance soon turns to rivalry.

MUBI's take

A Parisian bastion of high-kicking raunch and sozzled debauchery, the Moulin Rouge has proved a popular haunt for cinema’s romantic imagination. This zesty, Silver Lion-winning biopic of Toulouse-Lautrec is directed by the great John Huston, lending a simpatico ear to the artist’s libertine legacy.
