Synopsis

Set in 1936, as Nazi propaganda urges the nation’s Alpinists to compete to conquer the unclimbed north face of the Swiss massif—the Eiger—two reluctant German climbers begin their daring ascent of the most dangerous rock face in the Alps.

MUBI's take

Set on the biggest north face in the Alps, Philipp Stölzl’s survival drama captures the dangers of mountaineering with a thrilling sense of documentary realism. Starring Benno Fürmann (Jerichow), the film is also an excavation of political showmanship and propaganda in a Europe on the brink of war.
