Haikal, a producer of western drama TV, travels to Malaysia’s east coast in search for his identity as a Malay. There, destiny arranges a meeting with a girl who still upholds Malay traditions. Although she is engaged to someone else, Haikal finds himself strongly attracted to her.
This important late ’90s feature by director Erma Fatima marshals together sharp social criticism on issues of gender, religion, and ethnic identity to examine what it means to be Malay. The Last Malay Woman captures the resilience, as well as the true fighting spirit of Malay women.
