Synopsis

On the outskirts of Birmingham and the margins of society the Billingham family perform extreme rituals and break social taboos as they muddle through a life decided by factors beyond their control.

MUBI's take

A piercing debut from British photographer Richard Billingham, Ray & Liz evokes the work of Terence Davies in its retelling of the director’s Thatcher-era upbringing. Gorgeously shot on 16mm, it’s a striking study in familial dysfunction told with great sensitivity and a disquieting sense of humor.
