Strasbourg 1518 takes its inspiration from an unexplained mania that swept the city of Strasbourg in July 1518. What began with a few people dancing in the summer heat soon became an epidemic that seized the city for three months, with hundreds compelled to dance uncontrollably.
Inspired by the dancing plague of 1518, this short from Jonathan Glazer (Under the Skin) was made during 2020’s pandemic lockdown. Uniting some of today’s greatest dancers, and powered by Mica Levi’s hypnotic score, Strasbourg 1518 compellingly plays on the restless nature of our modern times.
