Synopsis

While a world war rages, Philippe, a draft-dodger from Quebec, takes refuge in the American West, surviving by competing in Charlie Chaplin impersonation contests. As Philippe makes his long journey home, he encounters various characters under the sway of a destructive madness.

MUBI's take

A Lynchian journey to the dark side of American capitalism, The Great Darkened Days is a genre-bending and genuinely moving fable from Canadian director Maxime Giroux (Felix & Meira). Oscillating between absurdism and sincerity, sublime beauty and pure chaos, this is cinema at its most intoxicating.
