Hugo Barrett is the servant of the Chelsea home of aristocrat Tony. He appears to be a loyal and competent employee, but Tony’s girlfriend Susan does not like him and asks Tony to send him away. When Barrett persuades Tony to hire his sister Vera as a live-in maid, matters take a turn for the worse.
A sharp, psychosexual and psycho-social masterpiece from the brilliant and controversial post-war American director Joseph Losey, The Servant was his first of many collaborations with playwright Harold Pinter. It stars Losey’s frequent muse Dirk Bogarde as a dissolute disrupter of British decorum.
