Synopsis

In 1950s Mexico City, variety theater Tivoli is at risk of being demolished because the authorities have plans to expand the Paseo de la Reforma. The theater manager, supported by his political satire comedian and by other employees and actors, try to find an alternative to save his source of work.

MUBI's take

A burlesque theater faces demolition in this wistful homage to the Mexico City of the 1940s and 1950s. One of Alberto Isaac’s most popular films, Tivoli is full of spirited musical numbers and exotic dancers, yet also mounts a scathing argument against gentrification, and corrupt politicians.
