Rabbi Sfar lives a quiet life with his daughter and her pets in ’20s Algeria. After swallowing the family parrot, the cat receives the miraculous gift of speech, only to tell lies. The Rabbi wants to keep the cat away but, madly in love with its mistress, it is ready to do anything to stay with her.
In this fantastical animated adaptation of his popular graphic novel series, Joann Sfar brings the beauty and complex politics of 1920s Algiers vividly to life. Informed by the director’s Jewish heritage, this philosophical plea for religious coexistence is adorably delivered by a loud-mouthed cat!
