After a breakup, Elvira, a transgender woman who has made an enormous sacrifice for love, struggles to reconcile her past life with her present identity. She recalls her religious childhood, her work as a butcher and her encounter with Anton, a former lover who completely changed her life.
Partially inspired by Fassbinder’s ex-lover, who committed suicide before the making of this film, In a Year with 13 Moons is both a personal and typically provocative work by the German director. Class conflict, gender transformation, and love ache all shape this tragic tale of rejection.
