After being released from prison, Billy’s (Vincent Gallo) first port of call is to find a bathroom, but instead he finds dancer Layla (Christina Ricci). He kidnaps her to go with him to his parents house to pretend to be his wife. To his surprise she agrees and plays her role convincingly.
With only three features under his belt (one of which he withdrew from circulation), director (and actor, musician and more) Vincent Gallo is still one of the great American filmmakers, and his stunning, idiosyncratic first film is his masterpiece: tender, pained, emotionally honest and bracing.
