The film portrays four- to six-year-old children at a nursery school. The cameras focus in particular on the vicissitudes of little Martin, a difficult child who cannot seem to fit in with his classmates.
Blending traces of neorealism with his particular brand of whimsy, Werner Herzog crafts a bittersweet childhood story in this early short. Despite the dark themes at its core, Herzog finds humor in this tale of rejection and acceptance, as he captures the state between loneliness and new friendship.
