Synopsis

Flik, a middle-class boy from Atlanta, is spending the summer with his religious grandfather in a Brooklyn housing project. With his grandfather’s preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik’s summer is a disaster—until he meets local girl Chazz, who shows him Brooklyn’s brighter side.

MUBI's take

Until Red Hook Summer, Spike Lee hadn’t taken a role in one of his own films since Summer of Sam. Reprising his Mookie character from Do the Right Thing, the New York icon mounts a loose-limbed drama that is equal parts gospel musical, hangout movie, and spiritual sequel to his 1989 masterpiece.
