A lonely working-class girl has grown up in a Hungarian state orphanage. On receipt of a letter from her mother, the girl decides to embark on a trip to visit her, only to find out the woman has married and wishes to pass her daughter off as her niece.
The irrepressible Márta Mészáros made her feature debut with this alternately charming and mournful story about a young woman’s search for family. Led by Hungarian pop star Kati Kovács, The Girl juxtaposes tradition with a youthful, sexually liberated modernity.
